Hornwort sporocytes. Fluorescence light micrograph of a longitudinal section through a sporangium of an Anthoceros agrestis hornwort. The rounded green-white structures are sporocytes, part of the reproductive cycle of this plant. The sporocytes divide into spores that are dispersed on the wind to form new hornwort plants. Hornworts, liverworts and mosses are non-vascular plants collectively known as bryophytes. This sample has been imaged using autofluorescence under ultraviolet (UV) light. Magnification: x715 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
