John Pringle (1707-1782), Scottish physician. Pringle studied at St Andrews and Edinburgh, obtaining his medical degree from Leiden University in 1730. During the 1740s, he was with British armies fighting in Europe. Pringle's book 'Observations on the Diseases of the Army in Camp and Garrison' (1752) is considered a founding text of military medicine. Pringle was made a baronet in 1766 and appointed physician to King George III in 1774. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1745, he was awarded its Copley Medal in 1752, and served as President of the Royal Society from 1772 to 1778.
