In 1914 over 40,000 houses in Birmingham were still without an indoor water supply and around 58,000 households shared an outdoor toilet. In the new suburban home people had a separate kitchen area, (scullery) and their own private toilet. Sculleries were basic and contained a Belfast sink, boiler and gas cooker. Cooker made by GEC of Witton in 1935.
