The Ambassadors. A double portrait symbolising the conflicts between secular and religious authorities, represented by Jean de Dinteville (1504 - 1555), a landowner, and Georges de Selve (1508 - 1541), the Bishop of Lavaur. The painting is also cited as an example of anamorphosis in painting. Within the painting there are a number of scientific and mathematical elements: Shepard dial, Universal equinoctial dial, Quadrant, Polhedral Sundail, Torquetum and Peter Apian's arithmetic book.
