Ugandapithecus major primate fossil. Close-up of a portion of a fossil skull of Ugandapithecus major, an extinct hominid primate found in what is now Uganda during the Miocene epoch. This fossil was found in July 2011 at the Napak XV site on the slope of the Napak volcano in Uganda, by a team led by Martin Pickford (College de France, holding fossil) and Brigitte Senut (French National Museum of Natural History). It dates from around 19 to 20 million years ago. Prior to 2000, U. major was known as Proconsul major. Its exact relationship with other primates and human ancestors is not certain. Photographed on 19 September 2011, in Paris, France.
