Gamma ray sources, Milky Way galactic centre. Observations of the centre of the Milky Way galaxy using the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (FGST). At left is a map of gamma rays with energies between 1 and 3.16 GeV (gigaelectronvolts). Red indicates the greatest number. There are three prominent pulsars at left. Removing these and other known gamma ray sources reveals excess emission (right) that may arise from dark matter annihilations. This data was obtained with the FGST's Large Area Telescope (LAT). The results of these observations were published in 2014.
