The white material (at centre) is the parasite's larvae. The crustacean separates an individual salp from the chain of creatures that IS. maximai forms, and eats away the creature's central tissues. It then shelters inside the barrel-like remains and rears its young. IP. sedentariai is common in the Mediterranean Sea and the subtropical Atlantic. Magnification: x0.33 at 35mm size.
