Mariopteris pteridosperm fossil. Slab of coal shale containing a fossilised specimen of a Mariopteris pteridosperm. This specimen dates from around 300 million years ago, during the Westphalian stage of the Carboniferous. From the Fouquieres-les-Lens coalfield, the Pas-de-Calais region of France, it measures 23 by 25 centimetres. It is part of the Belhis collection at the Museum of Geology in Lille, France.
