Greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Also known as the glasshouse whitefly, this insect is a major pest in commercial food production. It damages crops by feeding on them, but also by transferring plant viruses. They are controlled by insecticide spraying and by biological control using parasitic wasps that lay their eggs in the whitefly larvae and pupae.
