Ovary. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a healthy ovary, showing the development of eggs (ova). Around the ovary is a connective tissue layer, the Itunica albuginea i (purple). The body of the ovary consists of the Istroma i (pink). In the peripheral Istroma i or cortex, many immature follicles (small white structures) contain devel- oping eggs. Secondary and graafian follicles have large fluid-filled spaces and maturing eggs. The central Istroma i or medulla has blood vessels (red) and few follicles. Once mature, an egg will burst out of a graafian follicle of the ovary, and will move into a fallopian tube to be fertilised. Stained with Azan. Magnification: x3 at 35mm size.
