Phonendoscope dating from around 1900, England. This device was used in the early 20th century for listening to internal sounds of the body (auscultation). The sounds would be intensified by resonation of the two circular plates attached to the stethoscope tubes. The sound would then be transmitted along the tubes to the physician's ears via the earpieces.
