Native Caribbean family. 18th-century artwork of a family of Caribbean people on the island of St Vincent. The people inhabiting this island were Kalinago (Carib) Indians that had migrated there from South America from about 1400. In 1796 the British deported the population of about 5000 to an island off Honduras. Their descendents live in Belize. This 1794 engraving is based on an original painting by Agostino Brunias (1730-1796), in the possession of William Young (1749-1815), Fellow of the Royal Society and colonial governor. Engraving from 'The History, Civil and Commercial of the British Colonies in the West Indies' by Bryan Edwards (1743-1800).
