A diving bell is a rigid chamber used to transport divers to depth in the ocean. The illustration shows a diver recovering items from a shipwreck whilst being supplied with air from within the bell. Early fire engines were pulled as a cart to the fire and were equipped with manual pumps manned by teams of men.
