French Polynesian heiva. 18th-century artwork of a heiva, a priest-like figure, encountered by European explorers in what is now called French Polynesia. The encounter took place on an island they called Yoolee-Etea (Ulietea, now known as Raiatea) in the Pacific. Engraving by Thomas Chambers, based on an artwork drawn by British artist Sydney Parkinson (c.1745-1771) on Captain James Cook's first voyage to the Pacific.
