Illness of Duke of Normandy. 14th-century artwork of the illness of John, Duke of Normandy (1319-1364), heir to the French throne, who was made Duke in 1332 and reigned as King John II from 1350. Doctors at his bedside are examining liquid in a flask, possibly urine, as they attempt to diagnose his illness. This artwork is from 'Chroniques de France ou de St Denis', a 14th-century royal compilation of the history of France from 1270 to 1380. This scene follows that of the death of King Charles IV in 1328 and precedes the death of the Duke of Brittany in 1341 and the execution of Olivier de Clisson in 1343.
