Constantinople. Whole folio (page) and border illustrations from the 14th-century Luttrell Psalter showing the city of Constantinople (bottom) and text from Psalm 89. This city was the capital of Byzantine Empire, but here is represented as an English walled city (with banners of the Luttrell and Sutton arms). It had been sacked and captured in 1204 by European Crusaders, who established the Latin Empire (1204-1261). The Luttrell Psalter is an illuminated manuscript that was produced in East Anglia, England, and dates from around the period 1325-1335. The text is in Latin, while the marginal illustrations show saints, Bible stories and everyday rural life.
