Tenochtitlan battle. Historical artwork of the Spanish and their indigenous allies (Tlaxcalans) in battle for the fortress of Xoloc in 1521 during the conquest of the Aztec Empire. They are on a causeway over the lake surrounding the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan. Led by Hernan Cortes, they attack from the right, with Spanish brigantines (above), Mexica canoes (below), a Mexica tiger warrior (left), and a temple (centre). This is a copy of panel 45 from the Lienzo de Tlaxcala, a 16th-century pictorial history of the conquest, produced by the Tlaxcalans. The title is in Nahuatl. Artwork published in 'Homenaje a Cristobal Colon: Antiguedades mexicanas' (1892).
