Edinburgh cityscape. 19th-century artwork looking west from Calton Hill over Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland. In the background are Edinburgh Castle (upper left) and Princes Street (upper right). The tower at far right is the Nelson Monument, built between 1807 and 1815 to commemorate Horatio Nelson's victory and death at the Battle of Trafalgar (1805). In the foreground (lower right), a one-armed Nelson-like figure, with telescope and greyhound, talks to two young boys. At lower left is Bridewell Prison (1790s, since demolished). At centre left is Old North Bridge (1760s, demolished 1896). This 1810 artwork is by Francis John Sarjent (1780-1812).
