Evolution satire 'Monkeyana'. 19th-century satirical artwork of a gorilla wearing a placard bearing the words: 'Am I a Man and a Brother?'. This parody of the anti-slavery slogan of Josiah Wedgwood was part of the debate surrounding Charles Darwin's 'Origin of Species' (1859) on his theory of evolution. This artwork was published on 18 May 1861 in the London magazine 'Punch' to accompany a satirical poem by palaeontologist Philip Egerton. Written from the viewpoint of the gorilla, Egerton's poem took the side of Thomas Huxley in his debate with Richard Owen on the brain anatomy of primates (what was called the 'Great Hippocampus Question').
