James Mills Peirce (1834-1906), US mathematician. Peirce was the son of US mathematician Benjamin Peirce (1809-1880) who taught at Harvard University, Cambridge, USA, from 1831 to his death. James was the first of his five children, and graduated from Harvard in 1853. James was a mathematical tutor at Harvard from 1854, resigning to pursue studies in divinity, graduating in 1859. He returned to mathematics in 1861, becoming professor at Harvard in 1869, attaining his father's professorship in 1885. He was also Dean of the Graduate School (1890-1895) and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (1895-1898).
