Julian Haynes Steward (1902-1972), US anthropologist. Steward is holding part of the skeleton of an infant that he had discovered in a cave near Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA. It was thought that the cave was first occupied soon after it became habitable 10,000 to 20,000 years ago, a key part of the history of human occupation of North America. Steward, one of the pioneers of anthropology, established a department at the University of Michigan. Appointed to the Smithsonian Institution in 1935, his major work was on the theory of cultural ecology. He taught at Columbia University from 1946 to 1953.
