Roman mosaic (late 2nd-3rd century AD) which is reputed to show the lighthouse of Pharos with a cargo ship leaving the port of Alexandria. The structure conforms with the descriptions made by two Arab travellers; al-Yakubi in the 9th century and Ibn al-Sayj in1165. Designed in the 3rdc BC by the Greek architect Sostratus, it was was designated by Philo of Byzantium as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
