Henry Doubleday (1808-1875), British naturalist, ornithologist and entomologist. Doubleday's works include 'Nomenclature of British Birds' (1836) and 'Synonymic List of British Lepidoptera'. The latter was published between 1847 and 1850, with a second edition in 1859 and supplements in 1865 and 1873. Known as 'Doubleday's List', this work of over 2000 species was a landmark in British entomology. His extensive collection of moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera) is held by the Natural History Museum, London UK. This oil-on-board painting, by an unknown artist, dates from around 1857. Original held at the Natural History Museum.
