Hyaline cartilage. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of hyaline cartilage from a mammalian joint. Hyaline cartilage is a type of connective tissue that consists of an extracellular matrix produced by chondrocytes, the only cells found in cartilage. Single chondrocytes reside in lacunae (holes). Hyaline cartilage coats parts of the joints, reducing friction between the bones and allowing flexibility. It also provides structural support to the areas such as the nose and trachea (windpipe). Magnification: x3400 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
