Fake NASA Lockheed U-2 spy aircraft, with fictitious NASA markings added to support the CIA 'weather research' cover story for pilot Gary Powers, shot down over the Soviet Union on 1 May 1960. In reality, NASA did not use U-2 aircraft until 1971. The Soviets revealed that the pilot had been captured, and espionage equipment recovered from the wreckage. Powers, shot down by a Soviet surface-to-air missile near Sverdlovsk, was interrogated by the Soviet authorities and imprisoned for espionage. He was released in 1962 as part of a spy swap with the USA. Photographed at NASA Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base on 6 May 1960.
