Bunsen cell. View of an electrolytic cell made by Robert Bunsen in 1842. Known as a Bunsen cell or Bunsen battery, it has an outer zinc shell that acts as the anode. This contains sulphuric acid as an electrolyte. Into the centre of this is placed a porous container holding a carbon cathode sitting in nitric or chromic acid. This example is preserved at the Royal Institution, London.
