Sodium. Sample of metallic sodium made by Sir Humphrey Davy in 1807. This was made by the electrolysis of molten sodium hydroxide. Sodium reacts readily with water in the air so is kept under mineral oil. It is a very soft metal in Group I of the periodic table, with atomic number 11 and symbol Na. This sample is preserved at the Royal Institution, London.
