Laurent Lafforgue (born 1966), French mathematician. Lafforgue studied in Paris, obtaining his doctorate in 1994. He went on to became a research director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), and a professor at the IHES (Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques: Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies). He works in the fields of number theory and mathematical analysis, making major contributions to the Langlands program. He received the Fields Medal in 2002, and was elected to the French Academy of Sciences in 2003. Photographed in June 2010, in his office at the IHES, Bures-sur-Yvette, France.
