3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase, molecular model. This enzyme is found in human heart tissue, and catalyzes a reaction that is part of the beta-oxidation pathway. Its full name is short chain L-3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (SCHAD). SCHAD is part of the metabolic process of mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation, and is being studied in relation to a genetic disorder known as SCHAD deficiency. This condition can cause hypoglycemia, seizures, and death. The enzyme consists of two protein chains (red and green).
