Californian abalone shell was a major trade item as the local variety was thin and pallid, Often used for inlay work. Plaques such as this were known as Twenty Dollar size from their value in 1900. The incised hole suggests that it was worn as an ornament or used to decorate ceremonial gear. Northwest Coast of America. Kwakiutl. c 1900.
