HMS A5, Royal Nay submarine. This submarine, seen here in the period from around 1910 to 1915, was among the first submarines commissioned by the British Royal Navy. It was part of the A-class of submarines built between 1902 and 1905, improving on US Plunger-class submarines. HMS A5 was launched in March 1904, and decommissioned in December 1915. Used for defence and training, it carried a crew of 11, and was 32 metres long. On the surface it used a petrol engine, switching to electric power when submerged. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
