Bacterial needle complex protein rings, molecular model. These protein rings form part of the needle complex, itself part of the type three secretion system (T3SS) used by several gram-negative bacteria to probe potential host cells and inject them with proteins that help make the cell susceptible to infection. This ring structure is modelled from Salmonella typhimurium. The inner and outer rings each have 24 protein chains.
