The double-membrane envelope is thought to assist the virus to penetrate & infect cells. ^IHerpes simplex^i is a DNA virus, occurring in two forms: type 1 and 2. These types are visually identical, but are biochemically different. ^IHerpes simplex^i is a para- site of humans, causing a variety of infections including whitlows and cold sores of the mouth and genitalia.
