Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a ^IHerpes ^Isimplex^i virus. The symmetrical capsid or protein coat of the virus is seen at centre, surrounded by an irregularly-shaped envelope of lipoprotein. The double-membrane envelope is thought to assist the virus to penetrate & infect cells. ^IHerpes simplex^i is a DNA virus, occurring in two forms: type 1 and 2. These types are visually identical, but are biochemically different. ^IHerpes simplex^i is a para- site of humans, causing a variety of infections including whitlows and cold sores of the mouth and genitalia. Genital herpes is sexually transmitted, and associated with cervical cancers in women. Magnification: x200,000 at 5x7 inch size.
