The Fairlop Oak, Hainault Forest, 1800. 19th-century artwork showing a scene in 1800 at the large oak tree called the Fairlop Oak, in Hainault Forest, Essex, UK. A hunter by the tree has used a bow and arrow to kill a deer (lower left). The Fairlop Oak was thought to be at least 500 years old when it was blown down in 1820. It had a trunk with a circumference of 10-14 metres. An annual fair was held under its branches from 1725. Artwork from 'Greater London' (Edward Walford, 1883-4).
