John Lubbock (1834-1913), British biologist, archaeologist, and philanthropist. Lubbock studied social insects, devising a movable glass-sided container called a Lubbock nest to view them. He found that ants can recognize colours and see ultraviolet light. He was also the first to use obstacles and mazes to test their intelligence. He coined the words palaeolithic and neolithic to describe the early and late Stone Age, and was an exponent of Darwin's ideas. He inherited his father's baronetcy in 1865. He was later raised to the peerage as Baron Avebury in 1900, commemorating his work on the prehistoric site at Avebury, Wiltshire.
