Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa (c.64 BC-12 BC), Roman general. Agrippa served as a soldier and general of Rome at the time of Julius Caesar, fighting in the civil war of 49-45 BC. Agrippa then led his forces in support of Octavian (the future emperor Augustus) following Caesar's assassination. Agrippa was appointed governor of Transalpine Gaul in around 38 BC. He also served in public office, overseeing repairs to Rome's infrastructure and buildings. Agrippa returned to command in the wars against Antony and Cleopatra, playing a key role in the decisive victory at the Battle of Actium (31 BC). Artwork from 'Histoire des Romains' (1883).
