Rock hyrax family on rocks. Rock hyraxes (Procavia capensis) are found throughout southern Africa, Arabia and the Middle East. They feed on grasses, herbs and shrubs and live in large colonies with females giving birth to two or three young after a 6 to 7 month gestation period. The hyrax is a ruminant and is thought to be one of the closest living relatives to the elephant. Photographed in the Namaqua Desert, Namaqualand, South Africa.
