Transcription. Molecular model of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, horizontal) transcription. During transcription, a complementary messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) strand (vertical) is synthesised. The enzyme RNA polymerase (not shown) recognises a start sign on the DNA strand and moves along the strand building the mRNA. mRNA is the intermediary between DNA and its protein product.
