Eugene Sandow (1867-1925), Prussian strongman. Sandow, born Friedrich Wilhelm Muller, is known as the father of modern bodybuilding. He found fame in London in 1889 for his amazing feats of strength and went on to tour the world performing these feats as well as muscle poses. Sandow opened an Institute of Physical Culture in London, published a monthly periodical and wrote a number of books on weight lifting and exercise. He also invented and improved exercise equipment.
