16th-century stone dovecot. Large bee-hive shaped dovecot constructed from sandstone rubbble. Dovecots house birds such as pigeons and doves. This one is at Learmonth Gardens, Strawberry Bank, Linlithgow, Scotland. It was built in the 16th century for the Barons Ross of Halkhead. It has 370 nest holes for pigeons, which were fattened and then eaten in the winter. In Scotland, dovecots are also known as doocots.
