Cornelius Drebbel's submarine. Computer artwork of the first navigable submarine that consisted of a leather-covered wooden frame. This submersible vehicle was designed and built by the Dutch scientist Cornelius Drebbel (1572-1633) in 1620, using a design by the English mathematician William Bourne. Shown here is his final (third) model, which had 6 oars and could carry 16 passengers.
