Orthoclase and quartz crystals. Sample of rock containing orthoclase crystals (dirty white) interspersed with quartz crystals (dark transparent). Orthoclase, or adularia, is a type of feldspar (potassium aluminium silicate) and a major granite-forming mineral. Quartz is a form of silica (silicon dioxide). This specimen was found in the Sinai desert, Egypt. Actual width is 105 mm.
