Paul Zacchias (1584-1659), Italian physician. Born in Rome, Zacchias studied medicine but was also a philosopher, poet and medico-legal scholar. He rose to become personal physician to Pope Innocent X, and advised the Rota Romana, the highest Papal appeal court. His work fundamentally advanced the discipline of medical jurisprudence, with his major work in this area being 'Quaestiones medico-legales' (1557). Lithograph from 'Galerie medicale' (1825-1829), a collection of portraits by Pierre Roch Vigneron (1789-1872).
