Curtiss seaplane 'America'. Aviators testing the first Curtiss Model H flying boat (called 'America') in June 1914. This flying boat, designed and built in a collaboration between US and British aviators Glenn Curtiss and John Cyril Porte, was intended to claim the prize for the first non-stop aerial crossing of the Atlantic. Here, Porte and US aviator George E. A. Hallett are testing the 'America' at Keuka Lake, Hammondsport, New York, USA, on 22 June 1914. Plans to cross the Atlantic were abandoned with the outbreak of the First World War. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
