19th century diver. Historical artwork of a diver on the seabed, holding a lamp, with a variety of underwater life. He is wearing a one-piece suit of rubberised cloth and a brass helmet with glass portholes. These suits were known as heavy-footers as the boots had lead weights built in, which helped stabilise the diver as they walked. They were permanently linked to the surface by an umbilical air supply, and by winch cables.
