1797 diving suit. Engraving of the first diving suit, invented in 1797 by the German, Klingert. A domed tin-plate cylinder covered the diver's head and torso, leaving his arms free. Connected to this by watertight seals were a pair of leather trunks and a short-sleeved bodice. Tight straps at the elbows and knees kept the suit watertight. Two tubes connected to the helmet allowed the diver to breathe: one supplied fresh air while the second was intended to evacuate exhaled air. Glass- covered holes at eye level enabled the diver to see out and lead weights hung at the waist provided ballast.
