Radio image of quasar 0137+012, at a wavelength of 18cm. The quasar is 3000 million light-years away. Its central core (small white spot at centre) has ejected jets" of electrons to form the "clouds" of radio emission above & below. The comma shape of the upper cloud is probably due to the electron jet having moved, or precessed, in the past. The combines data from the VLA radio telescope in New Mexico & the MERLIN network of radio telescopes in England. The VLA's beam (1.2 arcseconds) provides the broad outlines, MERLIN's finer beam (0.4 arc- seconds) the details. The colours represent inten- sity of 18cm emission from the quasar, from white for most intense to dark blue for least intense."
