Active galaxy NGC 2841. This galaxy lies around 31 million light years from Earth in the constellation Ursa Major. It is an active galaxy, one whose energy output is not simply derived from stars and other normal sources. NGC 2841 has a weakly active nucleus called a low ionisation nuclear emission-line region (LINER). These are radio sources and show emission lines characteristic of very fast moving gas in the nucleus. Although still more active than most galactic nuclei, LINERs are weaker emitters of radio radiation than radio galaxies and quasars.
