Active galaxy. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of the Circinus active (Seyfert) galaxy. A Seyfert galaxy is thought to have a black hole at the centre of its small, bright nucleus (white). The super-massive black hole accretes gas and dust from the galaxy and emits some of it in two fast beams which jet from either side of the galaxy. One (magenta) is seen extending to upper centre here. This galaxy lies around 13 million light years from Earth in the constellation Circinus.
