Optical CCD (Charge Coupled Device) of the spiral galaxy NGC 2841. NGC 2841 is classified as a LINER (Low Ionisation Nuclear Emission-Line Regions) galaxy. LINERs are common spiral galaxies characterised by an intense activity in the central region. Here strong emission lines are emitted from ions such as singly and doubly ionised oxygen. Unlike other active galaxies such as Seyfert galaxies and quasars the dominant emitting region in a LINER is not confined to a tiny area in the centre but involves a sizable fraction of the galaxy's central bulge. NGC 2841 shows several dark lanes which are caused by clouds of dust absorbing the light here emitted.
